Check Out Local Wine Tasting in Kansas City & Neighboring Communities
For those of us who have lived in the Kansas City area for a while, we know there is a lot to see and do. You probably know there are dozens of great bars and restaurants, many of which may be minutes from where you live.
Did you realize there are approximately 40 wineries with tasting rooms or wine bars across the city and out in the nearby countryside? Whether you want to spend an evening sampling delicious wine with a friend or have an afternoon adventure outside of town, there are a multitude of choices for wine tasting in Kansas City.
Northern Kansas City Area Wineries & Wine Bars
Located in Parkville and aptly named, the owners of the Parkville Wine House restored a 100+-year-old house into a full bar with craft brews, fine wines, and other spirits while maintaining much of the original charm and fixtures. If you are hungry or want to enjoy more than a few samples, you can get a bite to eat, too! They are open daily, but their hours vary by day.
North of the city in Smithville, you can find Ladoga Ridge Winery. The vineyards and winery are family-owned. They have created their own varieties of whites, reds, fruity wines, and seasonal wines, which you can sample at the winery. Ladoga Ridge Winery hosts concerts in the warmer months and has a few different areas available for your special event. The winery has unique seasonal hours.
As part of a chain that spans much of the Midwest to the East, Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restaurant has one location in Northland and a downtown wine bar in Kansas City on Broadway. They offer their award-winning hand-crafted wines in "Napa-style" tasting rooms and create delicious meals in their restaurants that combine modern culinary trends with traditional comfort foods. There is a wine happy hour on weekdays from 3:30-5 pm, and Brunch & Bubbles is available on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am – 2 pm at either Kansas City, MO location.
Take a Short Trip Out Into the Countryside
To the east of the city is a winery rich with Missouri history. The Odd Fellows Homesite in Liberty has become the Belvoir Winery. Their dry, semi-dry, sweet, and fortified wines are made only of Missouri-grown grapes, largely from their own vines. The tasting room is open Monday-Friday from 3 - 9 pm, Saturdays from 11 am – 9 pm, and Sundays from noon – 6 pm. They host private events and have an inn for overnight stays.
Fence Stile Vineyards, Winery & Distillery is a bit farther out of town but still close enough for a nice evening out or day trip. You can take a wine cave tour with extensive tasting opportunities and, on Sundays, enjoy Acoustic in the Caves, a concert like no other. It's usually best to reserve a spot for a wine cave tour in advance during weekends and around special events. You can also sample some of their wines out in the garden, on the patio overlooking the vineyards, or in the indoor tasting room. They are open Thursdays through Sundays in Excelsior Springs.
Also in Excelsior Springs, Shamrock Hills Vineyard & Winery first planted their own vines in 2023, also producing their inaugural vintage wine the same year. They already have award winners among their whites, reds, rosés, and reserve wines despite being relative newcomers. They are open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and you can get a bite to eat with a charcuterie board or other snacks. There are often live music events here and a cabin for rent if you want to stay a while.
In Rayville, you might enjoy a visit to the Van Till Family Farm Winery. Open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 11 am – 5 pm for wine tasting and Fridays and Saturdays from noon until 9 pm for wine tasting and wood-fired oven pizza, the Van Tills look to offer you an unforgettable experience while you enjoy their Missouri wine. Check out their wine barn, wine garden, or the Norton Room for your next personal or corporate event.
Downtown Wine Bars in Kansas City
There are a few wine bars in and around Kansas City's downtown area. The popular Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen is easy to access in the Crossroads Art District. This wine bar enjoys being "that place where our community can come together." They host winemaker events where they feature winemaking professionals from all around the world and the wine they produce, giving you the chance to meet those who have developed your favorites. Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen offers both a dinner menu and a late-night menu and is open daily starting at 4 pm.
The Mineral Lounge is Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen's partner location. It is a Mediterranean restaurant and wine bar on Broadway Blvd. Open Wednesdays through Sundays, the Mineral Lounge boasts an extensive wine menu of red, white, rosé, orange, and sparkling wines, including non-alcoholic sparkling chardonnay and rosé.
The Vintage '78 Wine Bar is another great option in the greater Kansas City area, although you must drive to Overland Park. They have dozens of excellent options on their extensive wine list, with the option of buying a one-ounce tasting glass, a half-glass, or a full five-ounce pour. Wine connoisseurs can create their own flights with vintages that are often only available by the bottle. Their full food menu includes incredible imported snacks, fresh salads, sandwiches, entrees like mushroom gnocchi, and irresistible desserts.
